BOSTON (Reuters) - After almost three decades of living like a hermit near a pond in central Maine, where he supported himself by stealing food from nearby camps, a 47-year-old man was arrested last week, police said on Tuesday.
The man, Christopher Knight, told authorities he went into the woods 27 years ago near Rome, Maine, about 20 miles north of the state capital Augusta, but he offered little explanation for what motivated him to do so.
Knight, who appears neatly groomed and clean-shaven in a police booking photo, admitted to breaking into the Pine Tree Camp more than 50 times and altogether is suspected of committing more than 1,000 burglaries around his campsite, Maine State Police said.
He had avoided people by hiding his camp, which he built out of tarps and featured camouflage-painted garbage cans, according to a photo released by police.
He is being held at the Kennebec County Jail.

"Durango is going to be expensive ? $500, $300 with a subscription ? that kind of thing. Originally, they were going to announce this thing on April 24. Now they are going to announce it on May 21. We know there are events occurring this year where we are going to learn more about Durango. E3 is going to occur, Build is going to occur in San Francisco in June when they are going to talk about the developer story because it is a Windows 8 device. It is going to have the same, or basically the same, developer tools and developer APIs," said Paul Thurrott, a well-known Microsoft expert, in the recent What The Tech's video podcast.
Microsoft released the Xbox 360 console in the U.S. back in 2005 at $299 and $399 price-points and it has taken the company quite some time to slash pricing of the product to mainstream $199. With models priced at $399 and $499 the software giant will hardly be able to outsell the Xbox 360 game console at least early in the lifecycle. Mr. Thurrott also revealed that according to his sources, the console would require a constant internet connection
It is also rumoured that Microsoft intends to release a low-cost Xbox 360 version code-named Stingray at $99 price-point later this year, bringing value gaming and advanced entertainment capabilities to customers in budget. While the company is clearly interested in such an offering, given that modern Xbox 360 games cost $50 and higher, the Stingray will barely get popular among casual gamers, but will rather be a substitute for those, who want to play current titles that will not work on Xbox Next.
Microsoft Xbox Next ?Durango? is expected to be architecturally similar to the PlayStation 4. It is believed that the future Xbox will be powered by AMD Fusion custom-designed system-on-chip with eight x86 low-power/low-cost Jaguar cores, AMD Radeon HD graphics with GCN architecture as well as 8GB of DDR3 system memory. The console is projected to feature hard disk drive, Blu-ray disc drive as well as robust Xbox Live online service. It is believed that Microsoft Xbox ?Durango? has lower-performance graphics sub-system as well as slower memory sub-system when compared to Sony PS4.

An analysis of what is known about the Xbox Next clearly points to the fact that Microsoft had put a great deal of attention to make the Durango a high-quality general-purpose device for the living room, while compromising some of the gaming-related aspects (e.g., graphics performance). The video games for the Microsoft Xbox Next will clearly look better and feel better than titles developed for the Xbox 360 simply because of the eight-year gap in technologies under the hoods of the systems. However, only time will show how future-proof will be Microsoft?s Durango console for the core gamers who demand improvements of titles throughout the active lifetime of the console that could span for eight years, as in the case of the Xbox 360.

JC Penney CEO Ron Johnson, who twice tried to revamp the retailer, is out after sales dove 25 percent last year, a source familiar with the situation said. Former CEO Mike Ullman will rejoin the company.
Johnson, a former Apple executive, had come under fire for his plans to revitalize the 110-year-old retailer by instituting a no-sale strategy and bringing in more fashionable clothing from edgier designers such as Betsy Johnson. That strategy hasn't yielded better results.
Ullman was CEO at the Plano, Texas-based retailer from Dec. 1, 2004 to Oct. 31, 2011 when Johnson replaced him.
Following the news of Johnson's ouster on Monday, shares spiked nearly 10 percent. JC Penney stock is trading 1.5 percent higher.

That alone is a turnaround: Since Johnson took over in 2011, JC Penney shares went down 51 percent, and the company's market cap has fallen to $3.49 billion from $6.84 billion.
Johnson's ouster appeared to have been foreshadowed Friday, when hedge fund manager William Ackman said at an investment conference that Johnson -- who he handpicked to turn around the struggling retailer -- had made "big mistakes" and that the impact had been "very close to a disaster."
"One of the big mistakes was perhaps too much change too quickly without adequate testing on what the impact would be," Ackman said at the conference sponsored by Thomson Reuters. Ackman, who had once been a booster for Johnson, heads the $12 billion Pershing Square Capital Management, which is JC Penney's biggest shareholder.

Thomas Engibous, chairman of the company's board, praised Ullman in a statement Monday: "We are fortunate to have someone with Mike's proven experience and leadership abilities to take the reins at the company at this important time. He is well-positioned to quickly analyze the situation jcpenney faces and take steps to improve the company's performance."
Liz Dunn, an analyst at Macquarie Capital, said the announcement suggests that "things are very much in flux at JC Penney."
"I don't think they can simply return to the old strategy and all will be well," Dunn said. "They've got some big questions to answer and I think the release sort of hinted at that when Ullman said he's got some work to do to even figure out what's salvageable."

Kim Jong-un announced that North Korea will restart its nuclear facility, making the country's nuclear program a source of deep concern for the international community.

In response, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the former foreign minister of South Korea, today described the North as on ?a collision course with the international community? ? even as some Korea watchers call it all bluster and bellicosity.
Experts say it could take as little as three months to a year for scientists to restart the Yongbyon nuclear facility. The facility?was closed most recently in 2012 with the promise of food aid from the US ? though that so-called "food for nukes" deal fell through with the North's third nuclear test in February. ?
It is quite unclear whether young leader Kim Jung-un ? whose recent bone-jarring threats of war and attack are considered part of his consolidation of power inside Pyongyang and among the North Korean people ? will go ahead with an expensive project of plutonium reprocessing and enriching uranium, or use these to extract aid and talks.
A nuclear weapon or capability has long been the No. 1 prize sought by the Kim family dynasty in Pyongyang, dating to Kim?s grandfather Kim Il-sung, as the ultimate bargaining chip both for its own security and as a means to gain international attention and aid. In February, the North successfully tested a device, that resulted in UN sanctions that the North has protested are undeserved.
The reclusive state declared a ?state of war? exists between the two Koreas last weekend, and last month vowed to target Hawaii and Guam with its rockets, though they are not currently thought capable of reaching US bases, nor are they nuclear-tipped.
The Associated Press writes today that:
A spokesman for the North's General Department of Atomic Energy said scientists will quickly begin work "readjusting and restarting" a uranium enrichment plant and a graphite-moderated, 5-megawatt reactor that could produce a bomb's worth of plutonium each year.
AP also quotes North Korean expert Hwang Jihwan at the University of Seoul, South Korea, who argues that Pyongyang?s recent behavior aims at?"keeping tension and crisis alive to raise stakes ahead of possible future talks with the United States."
Essentially, reports the AP, "North Korea is asking the world, `What are you going to do about this?' "
Complicating matters is the fact that Kim Jong-un was considered by Western officials a relative unknown until he took over from his father, ?Dear Leader? Kim Jong-il last spring. And still, not much is known about him.
Bluster or not, the North?s belligerence has put the Korean peninsula on high alert. Kim Jong-un has scratched the armistice signed after the Korean War, cut military hotlines, brought new South Korean president Park Geun-hye to say that the South will retaliate over any provocations, and caused the US military, which has 28,000 troops in the South, to relocate sensitive radars and to send B-2 Stealth bombers in fly overs.
Yet, the Los Angeles Times today points out:
After the declaration of a "state of war" over the weekend, the White House said no major troop movements were detected in North Korea. White House officials have said the Pyongyang regime has shown no "action to back up the rhetoric."
The?U.S. Navy, however, is moving a sea-based radar platform closer to North Korea to track possible missile launches, a?Pentagon?official said Monday. The support is the latest step to deter the North and reassure South Korea and Japan that the U.S. is committed to their defense.
In one sense, Korea watchers say, the new regime is simply rehashing and upping the volume of an ideology and a language that the North and the Kim family have used for many years to remain in power and keep people unified by the threat of an enemy.?
Being taken seriously by the outside world is an important verification of the Kim regime, which feeds edited broadcasts of world media to its people, whose sources of information are carefully controlled.
Some analysts think officials in Pyongyang are beside themselves with the kind of attention they are now achieving, largely through verbal threats backed up by the nuclear test.
In a theater song performance broadcast to the nation in February, reminiscent of the kind of ?ballet? the Chinese used to perform during the Cultural Revolution, a stage backdrop contained the phrase,?"Let's strike the imperialists mercilessly with the same success we had carrying out the 3rd nuclear test."

Apr. 8, 2013 ? The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) has just released an important new Policy Statement on "Noninvasive Prenatal Screening for Fetal Aneuploidy."?
As background, in recent decades there have been many changes and improvements in prenatal genetic screening and diagnosis. The risk, however, of testing with specimens obtained by invasive procedures such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS) has led to the search for new methods using mother's blood specimens obtained noninvasively. The most recent advances in genomics and genomic technologies have resulted in such noninvasive prenatal screenings (NIPS). The acronym NIPS is used to emphasize the screening nature (false positives and false negatives do occur) of tests currently on the market.
The new ACMG Statement on Noninvasive Prenatal Screening addresses:
The Statement says that while studies are promising and demonstrate high sensitivity with low false-positive rates, there are limitations to NIPS, "NIPS for fetal aneuploidy has arrived; however, as with most new technologies, there is room for refinement." The report strongly states that positive results should be followed-up with an invasive diagnostic test before any decision is made regarding pregnancy termination.
Lead author of the ACMG Statement Anthony R. Gregg, MD, FACOG, FACMG and high- risk pregnancy physician said, "Obstetric care providers must become familiar with the advantages and disadvantages of the use of this approach. Clinicians should provide patients with both pretest and posttest counseling with the goal of avoiding patient harm or confusion -- I can't stress this enough."
Gregg added, "Most of the companies that are developing these tests have referred to it as NIPDiagnosis or NIPTest. In our view, it is NOT a diagnostic test such as chorionic villus sampling [CVS] or amniocentesis; hence, we coined the term Noninvasive Prenatal SCREENING (NIPS)."
NIPS was initially validated for Down syndrome screening and has been applied to other trisomies including 13 and 18 with sex chromosomes being added now.
ACMG Medical Director Barry Thompson, MD, FACMG, another author of the Statement added, "NIPS is now one of many approaches available to women who desire Down syndrome screening. Unlike other methods, it is minimally invasive in that it only requires a blood sample from the pregnant mother rather than the more invasive amniocentesis or CVS that have associated risks of miscarriage."
"NIPS is a very accurate screening test, " said Michael S. Watson, PhD, Executive Director of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. However, it is well known that the cells originate from 'extraembryonic tissues' around the fetus so aneuploidy status may not always be identical to the genetics of the fetus. The advantages include that the detection rate is higher, the negative predictive value is greater, and the false positive rate is lower, than any other current screening approaches for Down syndrome. It must be followed up, however, by a diagnostic test since NIPS is a screening test."
"Finally, NIPS does not replace a first trimester ultrasound (12-14 weeks); rather, it complements it," Watson added.
