Having it all: The work-family balance debate continues

Having it all ? a professional career and a family ? isn't possible, says Anne-Marie Slaughter in a recent Atlantic article. The piece reignited the debate about difficulties for working mothers and the need for more flexible time in the workplace.

By Leanne Italie,?Associated Press / June 28, 2012

In an article for The Atlantic magazine, former State Department official Anne-Marie Slaughter (seen here in an undated file photo) describes her struggles balancing a high-powered career with raising her two sons. The article reignited the debate on the difficulties for working mothers.

Amy Schultz Pearson is 31, married and has two young daughters. She just began training in anesthesiology and will be working 50 to 80 hours a week.

Pearson has a message for Anne-Marie Slaughter, the former State Department policymaker who lamented in The Atlantic that her "have it all" approach to work and family didn't go so well: She's not surprised.

The difference? Pearson is happy. She knows that even if having it all is a myth, she'll revert with pleasure to part-time work without guilt or regret.

"I feel that while feminists of the previous generation may have told my generation that we could 'have it all,' we have observed their 'have it all' lives long enough to see through the well-meaning front," said Pearson, who chose to stay in her Midwest hometown for her medical training so relatives can help her and her husband, a teacher, with the kids.

"We're not surprised when someone like Dr. Slaughter reneges, but maybe they are, and they feel they have let us down. It's no one's fault," she said. "It's the nature of the beast when trying to combat hundreds of years of inequity in a matter of decades."

Slaughter, 53, returned to academia at Princeton after two years in Washington, away from her teen boys but with a husband at home and her tenure intact. Since her magazine story last week burst open the debate on the difficulties for working mothers, she has heard from hundreds of women, most of whom were grateful that such a high-flying career juggler has spoken up about the need for more flexibility on the job.

One was a policewoman. Another a social worker. There was a Nobel laureate, and women who were the first in their families to graduate from college.

"They're saying, 'Thank you, I've been looking for honest counsel and haven't been able to find it,'" Slaughter told The Associated Press on Monday.

Consider Ana Homayoun, 33, in San Francisco, among the honest. She works as an education counselor and career trainer for high school and college girls. The toll on their lives gets lost in the have-it-all debate about career and family, she said.

"I talk to them about this issue all the time," Homayoun said. "It's this message that you can and should be able to have it all, all the time, and for a lot of them that seems to be polarizing and shame-inducing because they're really anxious about getting into the real world, and they can't figure out in their own head how they're supposed to make it all work."

For many, she said, waiting until they're Slaughter's age and at her elite level is too late.

"The planning what they want out of their lives needs to start in high school, college, to avoid reacting to a bad situation later," Homayoun said. "A lot of my friends in their 30s are leaving corporate high-powered tracks, not because they lack ambition or talent but because it doesn't seem feasible or workable for the entire arc of their lives."

Kathy Doyle Thomas, 55, is the executive vice president of a book store chain and chairman of the board of the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association. She's still on Plan A as the mother of three who has been juggling home and work for more than a decade.

Touchdown! Chinese Space Capsule With 3 Astronauts Returns to Earth

This story was updated at 11:50 p.m. ET.

Three Chinese astronauts returned to Earth Thursday (June 28) after 13 days in space on a historic mission that made their country only the third nation ever to successfully dock a manned spacecraft to another in orbit.

China's Shenzhou 9 space capsule landed at about10 p.m. EDT?(10 a.m. Friday, June 29 Beijing time) in Inner Mongolia, an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China. To prepare for their journey home, the space crew ? which included China's first female astronaut Liu Yang ? separated the Shenzhou 9 capsule its target, the Tiangong 1 prototype space module, on Wednesday (June 27).

Their landing was broadcast live on China's state-run CCTV television network, showing the capsule streaking through the atmosphere like a meteor, deploying its main parachute, then making the final landing and rolling over on its side in a rough touchdown.

"We fulfilled the first manned manual docking," mission commander Jing Haipeng told CCTV reporters after exiting the Shenzhou 9 capsule. His comments in Chinese were translated into English by CCTV. "For the country and people all across the country, thank you for your concerns." ?[Photos of China's Shenzhou 9 Mission]

Jing and crewmates Liu Yang and Liu Wang appeared to be in good health after their space mission. The trio wore broad smiles and waved to cameras after leaving their spacecraft, but did sit in reclined chairs to help ease their adaptation back to Earth's gravity after nearly two weeks in weightlessness.

Shortly after the landing, China's Premier Wen Jiabao proclaimed the Shenzhou 9 mission a complete success.

"This manned docking mission of Tiangong 1 and Shenzhou 9 marks a large milestone, a major breakthrough for China to master the space docking technology," Wen said while reading a statement. "And also, it marks a decisive step forward on China's second step on its space strategy."

China's big space leap

China's Shenzhou 9 mission, which included successful displays of manual and automatic dockings, represented an important leap forward for China's space program. In addition to being China's longest space mission to date, it also tested technology vital for the country's goal of building space station in orbit by the year 2020.

"Chinese astronauts have their own home in space now," Jing told China's President Hu Jintao on Tuesday (June 26) during a special call according to the state-run Xinhua news agency. "We are proud of our country!" ?

And while the orbital linkups are important technological achievements for China, the mission also carried a wider social impact because it included the country's first female astronaut: the 33-year-old Liu Yang.

"It was like a home in Tiangong, and I feel very happy and proud of my country," Liu Yang told reporters after landing.

Jing, the commander, is China's first veteran astronaut to fly in space twice. The third crewmember, Liu Wang, served as the Shenzhou 9 docking pilot.

"It feels really good to feel the ground and to be back home," Liu Wang said.

The?Shenzhou 9 mission launched into orbit on June 16 and performed China's first manned space rendezvous, after the spacecraft robotically docked to Tiangong 1 on June 18. Several days later, on June 24, the astronauts backed away from the orbiting module and parked their Shenzhou 9 spacecraft once more, demonstrating manual control over the procedure as well.

"This work was done by all space pioneers and staff and we'll remember you. It will be written in history," Wen said.

China's space station goal

The successful linkups made China only the third country, after the United States and Russia, to accomplish manned dockings in orbit.

The Shenzhou 9 mission, as well as experiments performed aboard?Tiangong 1?throughout the flight, tested technologies that will help China fulfill its goal of building a 60-ton space station in orbit by 2020. [How China's Space Station Will Work (Infographic)]

"The data will help us improve technologies for astronauts' future, long-term stays in a space station," said Chen Shanguang, chief commander of the mission's astronaut system,?according to Xinhua.

China is not a member nation of the $100 billion International Space Station in low-Earth orbit, a roughly 430-ton orbiting outpost that is jointly operated by more than a dozen countries.

But Chinese officials have outlined an ambitious space program for the nation, which includes collecting samples from the moon and robotically returning them to Earth before landing astronauts on the lunar surface.

The Shenzhou 9 mission is China's fourth manned spaceflight. Previous expeditions were launched in 2003, 2005 and 2008.

The Tiangong 1 test module was launched into orbit in September 2011. In November, a robotic spacecraft, called Shenzhou 8, completed the country's first unmanned space docking. According to Chinese officials, Tiangong 1 has performed well, and could play host to another crew in the near future.

"Based on current conditions, the service of Tiangong 1 can be extended," said He Yu, chief commander of the Shenzhou 9 spacecraft, reported Xinhua. "It has consumed less than one-fourth of its fuel and no back-up systems have been used."

Depending on its condition, the module could remain in orbit as China continues its space station construction efforts.

"If Tiangong 1 was in perfect shape, it could work side by side with Tiangong 2, which will be launched in the future," He said.

AboutOne (beta)

Families of any size need a way to centralize and back up their most important information, such as medical histories, deeds to major purchases, and priceless photos. AboutOne (free) is an online hub where you can upload files, jot down important information about your loved ones, and otherwise manage all the paperwork and data that's associated with running a household.

AboutOne Use
AboutOne is simple to use and has decent search functionality, which is crucial for a service of this type. Unfortunately, it doesn't contain enough built-in suggestions for how to use it or reasons to log in often. Other online family organizers (Doxo comes to mind) encourage you to use the service by aggressively steering you toward different areas of the site every time you log in. Doxo can also link with utility providers and other billed services, much as Mint.com connects with financial accounts and paid services, giving you more reason to log in frequently. With AboutOne, on the other hand, it's easy to forget you have an account, because there's no compelling reason to visit the site?until a disaster strikes.

Set Up and Features
Signing up for an account takes little more than entering an email address, creating a password, and setting up a few additional security login measures. Once you have an account, AboutOne begins by having you enter information about your family, including pets. You can fill in details such as birthday, sex, blood type, and social security number.

Aside from entering information about family members, you can also add contacts and inventory your possessions. The contacts manager lets you import other address books as well, such as those stored in Facebook and Google.

Two other key features, a family calendar and centralized place for documents, show up as icons on the site but aren't available as of this writing (the site is technically still in beta). I should hope that by the time the site is launched in full, documents integrate neatly with possessions. If I were to list a vehicle that I own, I would also want to attach directly to it documentation for the license, registration, insurance, and any warranties associated with it, rather than stick that paperwork in a separate area.

Beta? You Betchya
AboutOne remains in beta, and having had a deeper look at its functionality and lack of finish, it's clear that it is. AboutOne understands the need to centralize important family information, but hasn't quite figured out the best way to do so yet. What's holding the service back at the moment is a compelling reason for users to return and continually update their information. It needs a hook, like Doxo's integration with services and bill pay, to keep people coming back.

Campus Martius: On Friendship

I moved away from my hometown at an interesting age. I was 41. I didn't realize how established relationships/friendships are by that time, so here I am, five years later, without a social circle, which I've only just realized (for a variety of mundane reasons). How does one go about rebuilding a circle of friends at the age of 46?

Sony, Panasonic tying up in advanced TV displays

(AP) ? Long-time Japanese rivals Sony Corp. and Panasonic Corp. are working together to develop next-generation TV panels called OLEDs in a reversal of decades of rivalry as they try to catch up with South Korea's Samsung Electronics.

The companies said in a joint statement Monday they will share core technologies to develop OLED, or organic light-emitting diode, panels. They are aiming for low-cost mass production by 2013.

Both Sony and Panasonic have posted big losses after falling behind Samsung Electronics Co. and other Asian rivals in TVs. The joining of forces marks a departure from a long rivalry and highlights the pressure that Japanese manufacturers face to catch-up with Samsung in TVs.

Samsung is planning to start selling TVs with big OLED screens later this year. OLEDs use a different technology from Liquid Crystal Displays and delivers very clear, vivid imagery.

Fitch Ratings said the Sony-Panasonic tie-up underlined "the fall of Japanese tech companies," as such a tie-up was previously "unthinkable."

"Japanese OLED investment is better late than never," said Alvin Lim, Associate Director at Fitch. "While consumer demand for OLED is still unproven, without investment Japanese manufacturers could become stranded in the TV market should this technology become mainstream."

Sony was the first in the world to sell an OLED TV, with its 11-inch model in 2007, but it wasn't a strong seller, partly because of its small size.

Sony buys liquid-crystal displays from other manufacturers. It ended its joint-venture with Samsung to make LCDs earlier this year as panel prices fell and it became more cost-efficient to buy from other makers.

Both Sony and Panasonic reported record losses for the fiscal year ended March 31. They took a battering from plunging prices and a soaring yen, which puts the Japanese at a disadvantage against the Koreans, in price competitiveness.

Analysts say the Japanese could also be hit by Apple Inc.'s foray into TVs that may come in a couple of years. Apple has already eroded the profitability of the Japanese electronics makers with its hit iPod, iPhone and iPad devices.

Romney attacks 'Obamacare' ahead of SCOTUS ruling

(AP) ? With an eye on the Supreme Court ruling this week, Mitt Romney on Tuesday said President Barack Obama's time in office would have been wasted if the high court strikes down the president's signature health care overhaul.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee previewed his health care strategy while speaking to supporters outside a Virginia machine manufacturer just two days before the Supreme Court was expected to rule on the constitutionality of Obama's signature domestic achievement.

"If Obamacare is not deemed constitutional, then the first three-and-a-half years of this president's term will have been wasted on something that has not helped the American people," Romney told more than 1,000 supporters gathered outside Carter Machinery in southwest Virginia. "If it is deemed to stand, then I'll tell you one thing, we're going to have to have a president ? and I'm that one ? that's going to get rid of Obamacare. We're going to stop it on day one."

At a fundraiser in Atlanta Tuesday, Obama countered that his health care law was critical to expanding health care coverage for millions of Americans and preventing companies from discriminating against people who are sick.

"We don't need to refight this battle over health care. It's the right thing to do," Obama said.

Romney's plan would not prevent health care companies from denying coverage to new customers with medical conditions. Nor would he force them to cover young adults on their parents' plans through age 26.

Though the economy remains the No. 1 worry for voters, the health care ruling could have the biggest near-term political impact. If the Supreme Court upholds the law, it would mean validation for the president and the Democrats in Congress responsible for its passage in 2010. But the overhaul mobilized small-government advocates and was a big force behind the GOP takeover of the House that year. So if the law is upheld, Republicans have a clear case to make for strengthening their numbers and their power to overturn all or parts of it.

Romney has public events scheduled Tuesday and Wednesday in Virginia, a state that has been an aggressive opponent to the health care law under Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. The former Massachusetts governor is expected to deliver public remarks in Washington following the Supreme Court ruling Thursday.

Romney's promise to repeal the health care law has become a pillar in an agenda that so far offers voters few other specifics. He released a new television ad campaign late last week stressing that the elimination of the health care law will be the top priority in his administration's first 100 days.

Should the court strike down the law, however, attention would turn quickly to what he would do to help 50 million uninsured people get coverage and bring down the nation's spiraling health care costs.

Only about one-third of Americans support the law, according to a recent AP-GfK poll, but 77 percent want the president and Congress to start working on a new health care bill if the Supreme Court rules the 2010 overhaul unconstitutional.

Romney has promised to replace the measure with a handful of "common-sense" reforms, but has spent little time so far crafting a comprehensive plan. He did not address any plans to replace the law Tuesday.

Obama was set to appear Tuesday at two fundraisers in Atlanta, followed by two events in Florida.

Real Estate Investing Produces Extraordinary Profits | Green Real ...

Imagine making $5000 a year from real estate investing without recognizing you are real estate investing!

Real estate values are so dynamic. The marketplace is always fluid and changing. The only constant is the eventual escalation of value.

Suppose you had owned that little piece of property in your neighborhood years ago where McDonald?s is located today. If you had owned it for 20 or 30 years, what would your profit be from that sale?

Real estate values fluctuate in cycles and according to a myriad of owner situations. However, the price of real estate almost always goes up.

Let me give you a real-life example. (And if you are old enough, you have your own similar story!)

In 1970 I bought a little house in the Green Hills section of Nashville for $27,000. You know it wasn?t much because of the price. But it was home, and the location was respectable.

In 1978 I sold that house for a bigger house in Green Hills. The sales price for that little house I sold was $67,000.

That?s when the light bulb went off in my head! I suddenly realized that I had profited $40,000 from that little house in only eight years. I hadn?t added any more rooms or a patio. And I hadn?t even painted. I was witnessing first-hand how property values increase, often drastically!

I made a $5000 profit per year from that house, just from living in it.

It was an amazing discovery to me. It had been a reality forever, but it was no longer a vicarious experience in my mind. It was alive, because it was happening to me. And it changed my view of the world. That personal experience led me to start a real estate investing career.

I still live in Green Hills, and I pass that house every day on the way to the post office. That house recently sold for $200,000. Same size. Same location. But a phenomenal increase in value.

Asset growth from $27,000 to $200,000 is pretty astounding. And while the asset growth ratio varies from property to property (and city to city), real estate values generally increase. Even owning and maintaining your personal residence is cash generation right under your nose. I can?t believe I was so dumb not to see it before it became so apparent.

White Sox acquire Youkilis from Red Sox

(AP) ? Kevin Youkilis took off his batting helmet, waved to the crowd and blew a kiss to his adoring fans.

A favorite at Fenway Park for so long, he wanted a final chance to say so long.

The Boston Red Sox traded away the hard-nosed Youkilis on Sunday, sending the three-time All-Star infielder and cash to the Chicago White Sox for utilityman Brent Lillibridge and right-hander Zach Stewart.

"Bobby (Valentine) wanted him to have that moment of walking off the field," Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said.

A member of Boston teams that won the World Series in 2004 and 2007, the 33-year-old Youkilis had seen his playing time drastically cut lately. He now joins the AL Central-leading White Sox, who wanted a regular third baseman.

"I just got off the phone with him, he's very excited to join our club and he's got a little edge to him that I like," White Sox general manager Kenny Williams said. "I can't tell you exactly what he said, but he wants to come in and prove some people wrong."

Youkilis had a rousing end to his days with the Red Sox. He was unavailable after the game, leaving behind a locker without his nameplate above it.

After hitting an RBI triple in the seventh inning of a 9-4 win over the Atlanta Braves, he was lifted for a pinch runner. Longtime pal Nick Punto came out to replace him and the pair hugged.

Youkilis saluted the crowd and was rewarded with a standing ovation. His teammates, coaches and Valentine all were on the top step of the dugout cheering for him, and they urged Youkilis to take a curtain call.

Youkilis' time in Boston became limited because of the play of rookie Will Middlebrooks, hitting .326 with nine homers and 34 RBIs in 41 games.

"The way Middlebrooks was playing, he needs to be in the lineup every day," Cherington said. "Bobby's done a good job of shuffling everyday."

But the GM said the veteran Youkilis will long be remembered for his hustle and grit.

"He was a very passionate player that played very, very hard," Cherington said. "He sort of willed himself to being an All-Star and obviously was a huge contributor for us in the middle of the lineup. He did a lot of good things."

The Fenway faithful should get to see Youkilis soon. The White Sox visit Boston a week after next month's All-Star game.

The season started kind of rocky between Youkilis and first-year manager Valentine.

In April, Valentine questioned Youkilis' commitment to the game in his weekly television interview, then later apologized to him a day later.

Youkilis, who can play both of the corner infield spots, is a career .286 hitter with 133 homers and 563 RBIs.

Longtime teammate Dustin Pedroia said it was a tough day.

"He pushes me everyday," the Boston second baseman said. "I want to go out and play hard just like he does. He's always out there trying his best to do whatever he can to help us win. I appreciate him so much for that."

The White Sox have been looking for a third baseman with Brent Morel plagued by back problems.

"I think it's good for him. A good change of scenery, I'm sure," White Sox star Paul Konerko said. "Guy's a good player and he's been a great player in Boston for a long time so you can play at that level you can play anywhere."

The 25-year-old Stewart is 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA in 18 games with the White Sox this season. Lillibridge, 28, is hitting .175 with two RBIs and seven stolen bases in 48 games.

Cherington was excited to get Stewart.

"He's a good thrower and looks like he can be a major league starter," he said. "He just needs a little more time in the minors."

Lillibridge is expected to join the Red Sox in a utility role.

"I loved playing here, I enjoyed it so much," Lillibridge said after the White Sox beat visiting Milwaukee 1-0 in 10 innings. "I'm excited to see where my career will go and I'm excited to help the Red Sox."

Samsung pegs LTE Galaxy S III for South Korea in July, quadcore quite possibly intact

Remember that dream version of the Galaxy S III that melded the Exynos 4 Quad, LTE-based 4G and 2GB of RAM all in one ultimate device? It now looks much closer to reality. Just as the 3G version is landing on the country's shores through SK Telecom, Samsung is sending word that the Korean LTE version is due in early July -- and Chosun claims it should have the best of all worlds in terms of performance. There should even be DMB TV tuning and a 500-title Video Hub for local movie lovers. We're anxious about just what that combination could do to battery life and the price, neither of which were mentioned up front. There may be good reasons why the US versions run on the dual-core Snapdragon S4, after all. Still, if the Korean LTE version doesn't have to make any sacrifices and is just a few weeks away from stores, it'll be hard not to turn a deep shade of green watching our friends in Seoul get what could easily be the better deal.

Update: The company has since piped up and confirmed to The Verge that the Korean LTE version is, in fact, quad-core. The LTE sits on a discrete modem chip where it's normally more tightly integrated on the Snapdragon, however -- and that means a potential knock against the runtime given that the 2,100mAh battery hasn't been beefed up.

South Carolina eyeing third straight College World Series title

OMAHA, Neb. ? Arizona came to the College World Series as one of the hottest teams in the nation and swept three straight games to reach the championship round.

Yet coach Andy Lopez and his players know few outside their fan base are paying much attention to them as the best-of-three series starts Sunday.

That?s because South Carolina (49-18) has completed an improbable run to the finals, where it will try to become the first team in 40 years to win a third straight title.

?We?re just excited to be invited to the Ray Tanner Invitational,? Lopez said Saturday.

At that, Tanner, the Gamecocks? 16th-year coach, playfully punched Lopez to open their pre-finals news conference.

?We?ve got a pretty good team,? Tanner said, ?but we?re not the ?27 Yankees. We?ve had 28 one-run games. We know that every at-bat is crucial for us.

?We?ve got the chance to play in the finals a third time in a row. It?s hard to wrap your arms around that. You just have to have some good luck and fortune along the way, a couple clutch performances along the way.?

Sophomore right-hander Konner Wade (10-3), who threw a complete-game five-hit shutout against UCLA last Sunday, will be the Game 1 starter for Arizona (46-17).

Tanner was undecided on which pitcher will face an Arizona team that is fourth in the nation in batting (.330) and sixth in scoring (7.4 runs a game).

?Most of the time I?ll get a guy or two that kind of gets to me and says I really want the ball,? Tanner said with a smile. ?But since they?ve watched these guys hit, I?m not getting those guys. They?re avoiding me. All the pitchers are going in a different direction.?

Few would have expected the Gamecocks to even return to Omaha this year after they had to replace five regulars in the lineup from the team that beat Florida in the 2011 finals. They had to develop chemistry in an infield that had three new faces and bounce back from losses in five of their first six Southeastern Conference games.

At the CWS, their streak of 22 straight wins in NCAA tournament games ended with a 2-1 loss to Arkansas last Monday. They staved off elimination three times thanks to stellar pitching. They beat Kent State once and the Razorbacks twice in a span of 36 hours because of a Wednesday rainout.

?The whole story of a three-peat, as a fan I definitely would be rooting for that because that?s an unbelievable feat,? Arizona right fielder Robert Refsnyder said. ?The weird, quirky fan who wants to see Arizona win, I?ll take that fan.?

The last program to show as much dominance as the Gamecocks was Southern California, which won five straight championships from 1970-74.

Hog wild: Feral pig population explodes in U.S

UNION SPRINGS, Alabama (Reuters) - Until the shot rang out, the air was so quiet the circling bumblebee sounded like a chain saw and the woodpecker its construction crew.

Clambering down from the 16-foot-high deer stand, hunters walked over to the pig wallow they had been staring at for the last four hours. A large boar rushed past at a speed unimaginable for an animal its size. The hunt was on.

Fast, smart and dangerous, the wild boar was once the most prized hunter's catch in ancient Greece.

Now it is becoming a popular target of hunters in the United States. An explosion of wild pig populations has become such a nuisance that hunting seasons are being flung wide open for wild hog across the nation.

Hunt specials can be found year-round on eBay in almost every state, and even the National Wildlife Federation, a protector of wild animals, has joined the fray. At its annual meeting in Washington last month, the organization called for an effort to "remove" the destructive animals, including "lethal harvest" as part of the plan.

Biologists estimate there are 5 million wild pigs in the United States. Once found mainly in the Southeast, Hawaii and California, they have spread over the last two decades into the Northeast and Midwest.

"One problem is that hunters are relocating pigs to hunt them and the territory is what is expanding so dramatically. They move slowly across landscapes on their own, so this is a human cause," said Dr. Steve Ditchkoff, an associate professor of wildlife ecology and management at Auburn University.

They have no natural enemies, and once introduced to new areas, the pigs bred out of control.

A female can produce up to 14 piglets per litter, and produce an average of 2.5 litters per year, an overwhelming birth rate, according to Pam Swanner, with Alabama Black Belt Adventures, a non-profit promoting hunting and fishing in South Alabama. "They breed almost like rabbits."

The explosion of wild pig populations is causing millions of dollars worth of agricultural damage per year, and destroying habitat for other game, prompting farmers and hunters to unite.

A group of 20 to 30 pigs, known as a "sounder," can destroy a 10-acre crop of corn in less than a week, leaving nothing behind but muddy ruts, said Mark Hainds, author of "The Year of the Pig," about his quest from Hawaii to Florida in search of wild boar.

Hainds, who was raised on a pig farm, has seen 40 acres of planted trees uprooted by pigs in a single season.

"They are devastating to a forest habitat," said Hainds, who works in forestry to restore longleaf pine habitat.

DIRTY AND SCARY

Damages beyond ruined crops include the suspicion that wild hog contamination caused the 2006 E. coli outbreak from spinach. The California Department of Health Services identified E.coli in the feces of wild pigs living where the contaminated spinach was grown.

Even less appealing is the fact that pound for pound, pigs produce four times the solid waste of humans, according to the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production.

Hainds said the pigs he has killed averaged 110 pounds, though feral pigs can weigh 300 pounds or more.

The Black Belt region of Alabama, known for its rich, black soil, is a magnet for wild pigs and a hot spot for hunters with more than 20 lodges offering pig hunt packages.

Feral hogs have thick bones and a tough hide, making anything but a death shot a potentially dangerous mistake.

"They are scary," said Hainds, who prefers hunting at night, in the open, on foot, with a knife.

Tracking the wild swine takes stealth and daring, as the animals have a keen sense of smell - just sitting still in an open area where pigs routinely come to feed was enough to alert them to human presence. Staying upwind is a must as is an accurate shot and varying locations, as pigs will learn the places where hunters roam.

"Pigs are smart, they don't like getting shot," said Hainds.

They are also aggressive. Few North American big game animals will turn around and come back at you, he added. To him, wild boar hunting has it all: a challenging hunt, tasty eating and a good turn for the environment.

While the majestic and gentle doe may deter more squeamish hunters, few harbor such a romantic vision of the hog.

"I can't shoot Bambi, but I can kill a pig," said Tim Shaughnessy of Kentucky, whose wife purchased as a gift a $500-per-person pig hunt for him and his two college-age sons.

Other game animals have limited seasons and bag limits, often one per day, depending on the state. But in most places you can kill as many pigs as you can shoot.

After the wild pig was shot on the hunt in Union Springs the hunting party gathered near the shooter in the growing darkness. Flashlights searched the ground for spots of blood.

Even if a small pig had been hit, it was capable of hurting and even killing even the hunters, if it charged. About half a mile away, the pig had collapsed on a small mound. A second shot rang out, putting the animal out of its misery.
