MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar beat Nicolas Colsaerts and Paul Lawrie 1 up, ensuring that the Americans will have at least a four-point lead going into Sunday's singles matches.

Russian metals moguls settle RUSAL stake spat

LONDON/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian billionaires Oleg Deripaska and Michael Cherney reached an 11th-hour settlement in a dispute over a billion dollar slice of aluminum giant RUSAL , shortly before they were due to give evidence in a drawn-out London court case.

The case, which had been expected to run well into 2013, was due to dwell on allegations of broken promises, criminality and mob rule while shining a light on the murky carve-up of lucrative smelters in the 'wild east' of post-Soviet Siberia.

"Mr. Deripaska announces that Mr. Cherney's litigation in London against him has been terminated," a spokesperson for Deripaska said in a brief statement. "Neither party will be making any further comment in relation to the litigation or matters raised therein."

Cherney's team released a nearly identical statement.

Cherney, born in Ukraine, raised in Uzbekistan, Jewish by creed and living in Israel since leaving Russia in 1994, alleged that metals mogul Deripaska reneged on a deal to buy him out of their joint aluminum business, RUSAL.

Well-connected Deripaska, who controls RUSAL and is a survivor of President Vladimir Putin's crackdown on oligarchs who once wielded great political power, denied having had any such business relationship with Cherney. He alleged he was the victim of a protection racket Cherney helped orchestrate - an accusation Cherney denied.

Cherney, who in 2008 won the right to bring his case against Deripaska in London's respected courts - the venue of choice for the warring Russian wealthy - was due to be cross-examined next Tuesday via video-link from Israel. An outstanding arrest warrant relating to a separate money laundering investigation prevents him from travelling to London.

Lawyers were intrigued at the last-minute deal.

"The experience in most of these cases is that they do go to trial because no one is willing to back down," said Philippa Charles, a litigation partner at law firm Mayer Brown.

"So it's interesting that the level of publicity has perhaps focused the minds of both parties on whether or not it is actually worth having their dirty linen washed in public."

THE POWER OF METAL

The Russian aluminum industry, like much of Russia's raw materials sector, came under the control of a few powerful oligarchs during the huge selloff of state assets that followed the collapse of communism and of the Soviet Union in 1991. The brutality of the business rivalry over aluminum smelters gave birth to the term 'aluminum wars'.

Cherney's case against Deripaska had overtones of a recent battle between Russian oligarchs Boris Berezovsky and Roman Abramovich, which in August helped ensure the concept of "krysha", or roof, was established in English courts.

Berezovsky's claim for $6 billion was dismissed and Judge Elizabeth Gloster described him as an 'inherently unreliable witness'. Abramovich had said he had paid money to Berezovsky for 'krysha' services of political cover and protection,

A "krysha", in Russian gangster parlance, can be either a figure who genuinely protects, in return for payment, the interests of a business in a sometimes brutal business world or it can refer to a racketeer extorting money by intimidation. The boundary between the two can, of course, be blurred.

The case, which began in July when both sides published opening statements and lawyers laid out the details of their arguments in front of Judge Andrew Smith, hinged in part on what was agreed in a London hotel 11 year ago.

Cherney and Deripaska agreed they met at the Lanesborough Hotel on a March morning in 2001, that they signed one document and that Deripaska handed Cherney $250 million. Everything else, even exactly when they first met each other, was disputed.

Deripaska says he made the payment to terminate a krysha arrangement with Cherney, partly because his business was now powerful enough, and his security forces strong enough, to confront criminal gangs.

Cherney says he had orally agreed a 50/50 partnership with Deripaska in 1993, which lasted until March 2001. He alleges Deripaska then agreed at the Lanesborough meeting to pay him a preliminary $250 million for his aluminum interests held by Deripaska - and also agreed to buy him out of the remainder of his stake within a few years.

RUSAL, the product of a slew of takeovers and mergers mainly in Siberia, where the hydro-electric power needed to fuel hungry smelters comes cheap, has emerged as Russia's only aluminum producer. Cherney alleged a 13.2 percent stake belongs to him.

Deripaska, a former physics student who started investing in aluminum assets in 1991 who has entertained top British politicians on his 70 million pound ($114 million) yacht, says he was forced into a "krysha" after being threatened by some of the country's most powerful criminal gangs in the mid-1990s.

Stories abound about such "protection" mobs attacking the wives and relatives of those who failed to do their bidding, launching fictitious criminal proceedings, violent takeovers of businesses or simply liquidating rivals and critics.

A 13-year-old boy shot himself at Stillwater Junior High School Wednesday morning, according to police. A new study shows suicide now kills more people than car accidents.

?They face being bullied by other kids,? said Bryan Jones, a mental health therapist at Perspectives Behavioral Health Management in Fort Smith. ?They face disappointment in relationships, being overwhelmed by the school work.?

Life can be tough for teenagers.

?I think that society has put more pressure and more stress on people,? said Marion Pearson, a mental health professional.

A new study from the American Journal of Public Health shows suicide now kills more people than car accidents. Experts say suicide deaths rose 15-percent over the past decade.

?Economically you know life has gotten more harder for a lot of Americans and I see a lot of teens that try and help their parents with that burden by going to school and working and taking on more responsibility,? said Pearson.

Some say mental illness is sometimes misdiagnosed in young people. ?They say sometimes medications can increase the risk of suicide with those particular people,? said Darin Morgan, a nurse supervisor at Sparks Health System.

Experts recommend talking about suicide with your teen. ?If people talk about it people are less likely to actually go through with it when they know someone cares about them,? said Morgan.

Recognize warning signs like isolation, lots of sleeping, and being withdrawn.

?You wanna get help you know much sooner rather than later,? said Jones.

A Facebook memorial page set up by friends of the 13-year-old mentions that bullying may have caused the suicide. So far the superintendent says there is nothing to indicate that.

The handset measures 7.4 by 1.9 by 1.3 inches (HWD) and looks like a boomerang, with a curved and tapered profile. There are Call, End, and Volume buttons on the handset, as well as a Power switch towards the bottom. A dual-color LED on the handset flashes during incoming calls, but it also glows a bit too bright, even when not in use.

The iG1 is light and thin enough for long conversations, and its shape is easier on your ear and cheek than the hard glass slab of an iPhone 4S.?Unfortunately, it's a bit too thin to make cradling between your face and shoulder truly comfortable. The handset is more ergonomic than the iPhone itself, but I'd hardly call that a major strength or selling point here.?

Much like any other Bluetooth device, the iG1 is limited to around 30 feet, at which point static creeps in and voices begin to drop out. Performance and Conclusions
Unlike cell-to-landline solutions like the VTech Connect-to-Cell Cordless Phone System, the iG1 doesn't have the option to connect to real landlines in addition to cell phones. Instead, you get a single handset, tethered to the iPhone by Bluetooth, with no option to add satellite handsets. The VTech also has a display on its handsets for things like caller ID and synced address books.

Call quality using the iG1 was respectable, if not spectacular. In my tests, voices through the handset sounded louder and clearer than on the iPhone alone, but they also had a more robotic quality to them. Noise cancelling was on par with the iPhone's, but not as good as noise cancelling on a Bluetooth headset like the Aliph Jawbone Era.

Because the iG1 uses the Bluetooth headset profile, it can wirelessly activate Siri on iPhone 4S and 5 models or use the simple voice controls on older iPhones. Holding down the Call button activates the virtual assistant or brings up the voice prompt, and everything works through the iG1 just like it does on the phone itself. It's a useful trick, especially since there is no number pad or display on the iG1's handset.

Think of the Goodcall iG1 as more of a dock with a Bluetooth handset than a full cell-to-landline solution like VTech's system. Its good looks would make it a welcome addition to most desks, but it really doesn't bring too much to the table in terms of added functionality. While it's more comfortable to use than holding your phone to your head for hours at a time, you're paying a real premium for the stylish design here.?

Texas district's new policy allows educators of either gender to paddle male, female students

SPRINGTOWN, Texas - Like many schools in Texas, "spare the rod and spoil the child" might be considered the motto at Springtown High School.

But when two teenage girls there reportedly suffered bruises after being paddled by male assistant principals, some parents complained. They weren't upset about the punishment itself, but instead that the school violated the policy requiring an educator of the same sex as the student to dole out the paddling.

So the school district has changed its policy ? to expand, not abolish, corporal punishment. Board members voted Monday night to let administrators paddle students of the opposite sex, after Superintendent Michael Kelley cited a lack of women administrators to carry out spankings.

The new policy says a same-gender school official must witness the paddling, which is just one "swat," and that parents also can request one spanking per semester. In all cases, a parent must give written permission and request it in lieu of another punishment, such as suspension or detention.

"I personally think Texas is getting a black eye because of this," Kelley told The Associated Press. "People are assuming a school district can do whatever it wants because of this. That's not the case."

Texas law allows schools to use corporal punishment unless a parent or guardian prohibits it in writing. The issue of the student or educator's gender is not addressed, and there are no state standards on the minimum or maximum ages of students who can be spanked, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Cathi Watt, whose daughter was one of the two girls recently paddled, said Tuesday that she's OK with paddlings in schools "because they need it once in a while, and I got them when I was a kid." But she said the male administrator used too much force, so she does not support the new policy.

Watt said her 16-year-old daughter, Jada, deserved to be spanked after she spoke sarcastically to a teacher and an assistant principal, "but she did not deserve to be bruised."

"And what kind of message does it send these boys?" Watt said. "Is it telling them that it's OK to hit a girl?"

Texas is one of 19 states allowing schools to spank students, but 97 of the nation's 100 largest school districts have banned corporal punishment, according to the Center for Effective Discipline.

About 75 per cent of the state's school districts use corporal punishment, including Springtown, a town of about 2,700 located about 30 miles northwest of Fort Worth, according to People Opposed to Paddling Students, a group based in Houston. Some of the major districts, including Fort Worth, don't paddle students.

"It is never OK to hit a child. ... Men should not be padding teenage girls, because there is a sexual connotation with teen girls but also with teen boys," said Jimmy Dunne, president of People Opposed to Paddling Students.

State Rep. Alma Allen, D-Houston, thinks schools should never spank children, but her bill to abolish corporal punishment in Texas schools never passed. She said the compromised version of her bill, which did become law, was that parents could opt in.

"Parents can choose whether to spank their children at home," Allen said. "When you send a child to school, it should be a place to be motivated ? not a place to be beaten."

Windshield wiper for Mars dust developed: Actuator moved by materials that have shape memory

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? A team of researchers at Universidad Carlos III in Madrid (UC3M) has developed a device that works as a windshield wiper to eliminate Mars dust from the sensors on the NASA spacecrafts that travel to the Red Planet.

The actuator, a type of brush made up of Teflon fibers that are moved by materials that have shape memory, was designed to clean the ultraviolet sensors that were part of the North American space agency's Curiosity mission, although, in the end, the device did not fly with the Martian rover. "In our laboratories, we demonstrated that it worked correctly in the extreme conditions that it would have to endure on Mars, with temperatures ranging between zero degrees and eighty below zero Celsius, and an atmospheric pressure one hundred times lower than that of the Earth," explains the head of the project at UC3M, Luis Enrique Moreno, a tenured professor in the Department of Systems and Automatics Engineering.

This device, whose technology will be used to carry out other space missions that are already under way, solves a problem presented by the atmosphere of Mars: the accumulation of iron dust on the flat surfaces of sensors. The Spanish firm Crisa, part of Astrium Espa?a, charged UC3M with developing this device, so that it could be built into the Curiosity mission's meteorological station, REMS (Rover Environmental Monitoring Station), which was developed by a consortium of research centers under the direction of the Centro de Astrobiolog?a (CSIC/INTA -- Astrobiology Center).

One of the greatest challenges presented by this type of project is to reduce its weight, given that launching any type of material into space is very expensive. Because of this, the design used in this device relied on a type of actuators based on material with shape memory alloys (SMA), a very light nickel and titanium alloy that allows movement when the composite is heated. "The main advantage is that these alloys produce a material that is very strong as related to its weight, that is, a thread of less than one millimeter can lift a weight of 4 or 5 kilograms," states Professor Moreno. "The problem presented by these mechanisms," he continues, "is that, because they are based on thermal effects, they are not as efficient as motor technology, although they are much lighter, which is a very important consideration in space missions."

This group and other research groups at the UC3M are currently working on a second, more elaborate prototype based on SMA technology; it will be used to clean dust from fixed meteorological stations that will be deployed as part of the MEIGA-METNET mission, whose Mars launch is set for the year 2014. "We are also using this technology to develop the exoskeletons used to aid people with mobility problems, trying to substitute motors with these materials, in order to reduce the devices' weight and increase agility in their use," points out Luis Enrique Moreno. According to the researchers, this new product could even be used in the future to improve the joints on the gloves used by astronauts during their excursions out of the spacecraft.

Wet weather will diminish across the East Coast on Sunday as a low pressure system in eastern Canada lifts northeastward and away from the region. Flow around the system will continue producing lake effect rain showers across the southeastern shores of the Great Lakes, but shower activity will be light and widespread.

A cold front associated with the system will lift northeastward by mid-day, allowing for a few more showers and thunderstorms to develop over the far Northeast early in the day.As the system moves further away, it will continue pushing cool air in from central Canada. This will allow for chilly Fall weather to spread from the Upper Midwest and into the Ohio River Valley and Northeast.

High temperatures will remain in the 60s for these areas, while overnight lows will dip into the upper 20s for some of the Northern Tier states. Frost and freeze advisories will remain in effect for parts of the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions.

In the South, showers and thunderstorms will continue across southern Florida as a cold front lingers over the region. This obtains moisture from the eastern Gulf of Mexico, spreading more heavy rains and strong thunderstorms over southern Florida throughout the day.

Out West, a low pressure system moves eastward from the Pacific Northwest and into the Intermountain West on Sunday. This will push moisture in from the Pacific Ocean, triggering widespread showers and thunderstorms across the Intermountain West, Great Basin, and moving into the Northern Rockies. Breezy winds and cooler temperatures will accompany this system. Temperatures ranged Saturday in the lower 48 states from a morning low of 15 degrees at Hazen, N.D., to a high of 102 degrees at Imperial, Calif.

Top China official visits Afghanistan, signs security deal

KABUL (Reuters) - China has signed security and economic agreements with Afghanistan during a rare trip to Kabul by a top Chinese official, in deals seen aimed at bolstering Beijing's influence ahead of a NATO withdrawal of most combat forces by 2014.

Zhou Yongkang, China's domestic security chief and a member of the ruling Communist Party's central Politburo, made an unannounced visit to the Afghan capital late on Saturday, holding talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai at his garden palace.

Zhou's visit was the first to Afghanistan by a senior Chinese leader since 1966 and followed a visit by Karzai to Beijing in June when both countries agreed to cooperate on combating extremism in the region.

During the talks, held under tight security after violent protests in Kabul over a film which insults Islam, Zhou signed agreements on increased security and economic cooperation, including a deal to help "train, fund and equip Afghan police".

The agreement was not specific on how much assistance China planned to give the 149,000-strong police force, which is currently trained by the NATO-led coalition.

"It is in line with the fundamental interests of the two peoples for China and Afghanistan to strengthen a strategic and cooperative partnership which is also conducive to regional peace, stability and development," Zhou said in a statement, according to China's official Xinhua news agency.

Resource-hungry China, which has a small border with Afghanistan in the country's mountainous north-eastern corridor, is keen to invest in Afghan resource deposits worth as much as $1 trillion, based on U.S. Pentagon estimates.

Chinese state-owned miner China Metallurgical Group (MCC) operates the $3 billion Aynak copper mine in eastern Logar province, which has been subject to rocket attacks and other raids by insurgent groups looking to disrupt operations.

MCC won the contract to develop Aynak in 2008 and it was originally scheduled to begin production in 2013, but work has been delayed by the discovery of a huge and significant archaeological site in the area.

Zhou's visit underscores the concern in Beijing about a deterioration in security as the NATO presence in Afghanistan winds down.

It also comes after Karzai last week voiced concern about strategic pacts signed with chief ally the United States earlier this year ahead of talks starting in three weeks' time on a continued U.S. troop presence in Afghanistan beyond 2014.

Zhou had originally been scheduled to travel to Turkmenistan following a visit to Singapore, but diverted to Afghanistan for the meeting.

The Chinese government fully respects the right of the Afghan people to choose their own path of development and will actively participate in Afghanistan's reconstruction, Zhou told Karzai, according to Xinhua.

Karzai said security in the region "depends on the relations between Afghanistan and its neighbours", presidential spokesman Aimal Faizi said, with both countries agreeing to expand their so far limited ties.

News just came in that workers at Foxconn's Taiyuan plant have started a riot in the wee hours in China, and that police forces are on site to control the crowd. While the motive isn't clear, Sina Weibo user Li Tian reports that the riot isn't related to the recent anti-Japan protests, though judging by his photos, much damage has been done in the process. The same site suffered from a strike back in March over salary dispute -- the front-line workers failed to receive the promised pay rise. On a similar note, Foxconn's Chengdu plant also had a riot in June, but that was apparently due to an argument between some workers and a local restaurant owner.

Update: We are seeing unofficial reports claiming the "2,000-people" riot was triggered by security guards hitting a worker at 10pm local time.

Update 2: According to a provincial website, Foxconn's Taiyuan industrial park focuses on magnesium alloy components for consumer electronics, heat conduction products, LED lighting products, mobile phone products and magnesium alloy automotive components.

Update 3: An undercover report from August mentioned that the Taiyuan plant processed the back casing of the iPhone 5. It also highlighted the company's harsh management as well as "practically compulsory" over-time work. We don't doubt that this riot escalated due to dissatisfaction over working conditions.

Romney has $50.4 million for fall sprint

WASHINGTON (AP) ? At the end of August, Republican Mitt Romney had about $50.4 million to spend on the final months of the campaign, though reports released Thursday showed he owed $15 million on a loan taken that month.

Romney took out a $20 million loan in late August, in the days before his campaign had access to funds they had raised for the general election because he was not yet the official nominee. The new reports show he paid back $5 million before the end of August.

Romney won't have to release his September fundraising data until next month. Campaign officials have said he paid back an additional $4 million on the loan this month.

The loan helped Romney pay for mailings, staff salaries and TV advertising ? and it helped his finances appear healthier on paper. It boosted his total receipts to $86.6 million from the $66.6 million the campaign otherwise took in. Romney in fact spent almost as much as he raised during the month of August.

The loan boosted his cash-on-hand total from $35.4 million to $50.4 million.

Romney couldn't spend money raised for the general election until becoming his party's nominee in late August. He used general election money as collateral for the loan.

Romney and the Republican Party raised more than $111 million combined. That was less than President Barack Obama and the Democrats, who raised more than $114 million.

Sometimes my grandkids like to pretend that they are at a restaurant, called Gramma Connies Caf? that specializes in PB&J sandwiches with milk. I take their orders with their choice of grape or strawbery jam. Most of them will not eat the crust on the bread though. Sometimes they will only take a couple of bites from the middle for fear of getting the crust in their mouths. I argue that there?s still lots of perfectly good bread they are leaving behind with that crust. Usually instead of eating anymore, they ask for another sandwich!

Well, I finally broke down and quit trying to make them eat that last little bit of the bread still attached to the crust they left behind and just cut the crust off before I begin the sandwich making in the first place. No more arguing or creative coaxing needed. Pretty much all of the sandwich gets eaten and I don?t fret about the waste.
