Antwon Bailey is among nine former Syracuse football players preparing for NFL training camp

Former Syracuse University running back Antwon Bailey knows what he has to do as he enters his first preseason training camp Monday.

?I?m an undrafted guy,? said the All-Big East first-team selection. ?I?m a free agent. I?ve got to turn some heads. I?ve got to make wild plays, basically.?

Bailey, who signed with the Washington Redskins after not being chosen in April?s NFL Draft, will be the first of nine former Orange players to report as rookies to preseason camps this week.

With the exception of the Buffalo Bills, which had its rookies show up July 9, no camps have opened. They?ll start Monday and continue through July 27.

Seven players from the 2011 SU team and two from the 2010 team will try to show coaches they belong on the field when the new NFL season opens.

The most heralded of the group, Chandler Jones, a first-round pick of the New England Patriots, will begin his career on Thursday. The All-Big East defensive end was the highest draft pick from SU since another defensive end, Dwight Freeney, went to the Indianapolis Colts as a first-rounder in 2002.

Jones said via text that New England rookies aren?t permitted to give interviews.

The only other Orange player drafted in April was guard Andrew Tiller. He was taken in the sixth round by the New Orleans Saints and will start camp July 24.

Bailey said that after the Redskins held their rookie camp in May, he?s been busy with off-season training and conditioning, and learning the team?s playbook.

?Of course I?m nervous when I think about it,? he said. ?But you don?t really have time to think about it, between the training and how hard you work studying the playbook. I?m more ready than anything.?

Bailey said coaches told him that he needs to show a good grasp of the Redskins playbook, skill in catching the ball out of the backfield and pass blocking to give himself a chance to make the team.

?I?ve just been training my tail off,? he said.

Four other free agents from SU?s 2011 team are on NFL rosters as rookies, including free safety Phillip Thomas (Philadelphia Eagles), cornerback Kevyn Scott (Miami Dolphins), guard Michael Hay (St. Louis Rams) and wide receiver/returner Dorian Graham (Baltimore Ravens).

Two former Orange players considered NFL rookies this season are from the 2010 team ? linebacker-turned-fullback Derrell Smith and wide receiver Aaron Weaver.

Smith, a second-team All-Big East linebacker and team captain at SU his senior season, signed with Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent. He played on the Buccaneers? practice squad, was released and then picked up by the Houston Texans. Smith, who had been converted from running back to play defense at SU, was switched to fullback by the Texans in May. He?ll try to make the roster when that camp opens July 22.

Weaver was a transfer from Hofstra who made the Orange at receiver and caught a touchdown pass in the 2010 season-opening win at Akron. He suffered a season-ending knee injury in the next game at Washington and never took the field for SU again. After participating in SU?s pro day workouts in March, he was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs in May.

Fifteen other former Orange players are listed on NFL team rosters, including second-year players Delone Carter (running back, Indianapolis), Ryan Bartholomew (center, Arizona), and Doug Hogue (linebacker, Detroit).
