Movement therapy
My approach to health, yoga (movement therapy), fitness and bodywork was influenced greatly by the work of KRI Jagadish when I volunteered at his clinic in Mysore, India.

In his clinic people are treated with soft tissue manipulation, massage, yoga therapy and only food is used as the medicine. There I literally saw miracles of recovery on a daily basis and I came to realise the importance of treating health in a holistic manner.

Holistic approach & the health mandala
With the knowledge I gained there, combined with what I already knew, I put together the health mandala ? a holistic approach to improving health that looks at the areas of exercise, diet, vitality/energy levels and our attitude. If we want to improve our health we need to look at all of these areas in relation to our health goal.

However, to begin we first must check that we are not coming from a place of self-blame or recrimination for any health or body issues we may have. If we attempt to make war on our body to force it into a healthier state we will ultimately fail. We need to accept but not necessarily like that we are in our present condition due to our unique life history.

Positive thinking
The next step is to focus on positive outcomes and understand the benefits of those outcomes. We can visualise living a healthier life and enjoying the benefits. We also need to have a highest goal that is not dependent on outside validation or an ideal image of ourselves. For example, instead of trying to lose weight we can focus on feeling healthier, lighter and more energised.

This is a goal that is growth orientated and flexible. It does not set us up for failure if we don?t reach our specific goal. We may still aim to lose weight, for example, but it should not be our highest goal. When we feel good about ourselves it is easier to treat ourselves well.

Stress relief
Another tip is to learn to listen to the messages of the body. The body will respond to any unhealthy stresses, especially if they are chronic, that are placed upon it in a negative way whether it is from food or drug toxins, nutritional deficiency, harmful physical activity or inactivity, emotional or psychological stress and so on.

The body is hard wired for health and happiness and lets us know when we are going against its best interests. Hence, an awareness of what causes us stresses and a willingness to deal with the cause through this mindfulness will change them or our attitude to them, and guide us to a healthier and happier way of living.

Steve?s holistic health tips

  • Exercise regularly and do something you enjoy but generally work to only 70% of your maximum capacity.
  • Eat less meat and that includes chicken. People generally consume far too much protein.
  • Watch less news and television in general. It is mostly negative, generally not the truth and does nothing for relaxation.

Final decision for Fox News reporter will come in August, Colorado judge rules

Ed Andrieski / AP

Fox television reporter Jana Winter, right, and her attorneys arrive at district court for a hearing for Aurora theater shooting suspect James Holmes in Centennial, Colo., on Wednesday, April 10, 2013.

By Andrew Rafferty and Jack Chesnutt, NBC News

A decision on whether a journalist will be sent to jail for not revealing her sources has been delayed until August, a Colorado judge ruled Wednesday.

Lawyers for theater massacre suspect James Holmes have been contending that Fox News reporter Jana Winter needs to reveal the sources of a story she broke last July revealing Holmes had sent a notebook to his psychiatrist outlining his plot.

Holmes is accused of slaughtering 12 people at a midnight showing of Batman in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater last July.

And despite an offer last month to plead guilty, Holmes' lawyers are arguing that the law enforcement sources Winter cited in her piece violated a gag order and may have jeopardized the defendant's right to a fair trial.

Arapahoe County District Judge Carlos Samour Jr. has yet to decide whether Winter will need to testify.

On Wednesday, Samour said he must first know if the notebook will be a critical piece of evidence in the case before he can determine if Winter should be obligated to reveal her sources.

After consulting with the lawyers, the judge set the August 19 date, saying it will be likely known by then the role the notebook will play in the case.

Winter and her lawyers have indicated she will not reveal her sources if compelled. She could face jail time as a result.

On Monday, Samour wrote an opinion previewing today's ruling that sided with Winter's lawyers' arguments that that a decision should not be made until it is known whether the notebook will be a critical piece of evidence.

?The notebook may or may not be introduced, and its contents may or may not be of significance. Given these uncertainties, the record is inadequate,"?Samour wrote in his order.

Lawyers for Holmes may decide to argue that the notebook ? which according to the Fox News report is filled with stick figures holding guns and shooting other stick figures ? is protected by?doctor-patient privilege.

And if his team uses mental-health as a defense, the notebook could became a vital part of the case.?

Winter told the court in a March affidavit that her ability to do her job has already been compromised as a result of the legal issues, and being forced to take the stand will would destroy her career. ?

Multiple media organizations from around the country have come in to support Winter and any reporter's rights to not be legally obligated to reveal sources.

Italy's center-left leader denies party about to split

By Massimiliano Di Giorgio and Steve Scherer

ROME (Reuters) - Italy's Democratic Party (PD) chief Pier Luigi Bersani on Thursday denied an imminent split of his center-left bloc, the largest in parliament, amid increasing criticism of his leadership during a prolonged political stalemate.

The PD is divided over whether to join forces with its center-right rival Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who says a "grand coalition" is the only way to break the political impasse caused by February's inconclusive national vote.

Bersani has repeatedly ruled out an alliance with Berlusconi, an unpalatable figure for many PD voters, but high-ranking party officials increasingly argue that the party must open a dialogue with the 76-year-old media tycoon.

The February 24-25 election gave the center left control of the lower house but not the Senate, where only an alliance with Berlusconi's center right or Beppe Grillo's 5-Star Movement would permit the formation of a government.

The PD chief's attempts to woo the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement failed and he now hopes to be able to form what would in effect be a minority government tolerated by rival parties.

The strategy has come under criticism, however, with Rosy Bindi, the party president, telling the daily La Stampa newspaper on Thursday it would allow Berlusconi to pull the plug on the government whenever he wished.

"We'd be putting ourselves entirely in his hands," she said.

Bersani's main rival in the party, Matteo Renzi, the 38-year-old mayor of Florence who lost a primary last year to lead the center-left in the election, has also criticized his leader's strategy, saying that it is wasting vital time.

"They have to hurry up. I personally have said from day one that it would be better to vote again because when there's no clarity, it's better to do it again," he told La7 television on Thursday. "But if they want to get an agreement between Bersani and Berlusconi, they should get on with it."

The dissent has piled pressure on Bersani, a 61-year-old former industry minister, who has been criticized by many in the party by failing to translate the solid opinion poll lead it enjoyed before the election into success.

On Thursday, he dismissed speculation that the party was on the verge of splitting, telling reporters: "We don't have problems of this kind."

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

As the stalemate has dragged on, the parties have begun preparing for the next major battle, the election of a new president of the Republic to succeed current head of state Giorgio Napolitano, whose term ends on May 15.

The vote will be vital because with Napolitano's mandate running out, constitutional rules prevent him from dissolving parliament, leaving it to his successor to call new elections if no accord can be found to allow the formation of a government.

Voting by the two houses of parliament as well as by representatives from the regions, will begin on April 18 but may take several days to complete.

Bersani, who met Berlusconi on Tuesday to talk about the presidency, has opened up to talks with the center right to select a new head of state and on Thursday met Berlusconi ally Roberto Maroni, leader of the Northern League party.

Various names have been floated in the press, including former prime ministers Giuliano Amato, Romano Prodi and Massimo D'Alema and former European Commissioner Emma Bonino but all have aroused objections and no clear favorite has emerged.

Separately, Grillo's 5-Star Movement (M5S) opened an online vote to allow supporters to nominate candidates for the presidency prior to a vote on the 10 leading names on Monday.

"The Bed and Breakfast couple, Bersani and Berlusconi, are deciding in their secret salons a deal on the president ruling out any form of popular participation, while the M5S is opening an open and democratic process," Grillo said on his blog.
