Russia acknowledges Assad losing control

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's deputy foreign minister said Thursday that President Bashar Assad is losing control over Syria and his opponents may win, the first acknowledgement by Assad's main ally that he faces a likely defeat.

While Mikhail Bogdanov didn't issue any immediate signal that Russia could change its stance and come to support international sanctions against Assad's regime, his remarks carried by Russian news agencies appear to indicate that Moscow has begun positioning itself for a regime change in Syria.

"We must look at the facts: there is a trend for the government to progressively lose control over an increasing part of the territory," Bogdanov said during hearings at the Kremlin advisory body, the Public Chamber. "The opposition victory can't be excluded."

At the same time, he repeated Russia's call for a compromise, saying it would take the opposition a long time to defeat the regime and the country would suffer heavy casualties.

"The fighting will become even more intense, and you will lose tens of thousands and, perhaps, hundreds of thousands of people," he said. "If such a price for the ouster of the president seems acceptable to you, what can we do? We, of course, consider it absolutely unacceptable."

Russia has joined with China at the United Nations Security Council to veto three draft resolutions that would impose sanctions on Assad's regime over its bloody crackdown on the uprising that began in March 2011. Moscow also has continued to provide the Syrian government with weapons despite strong international protests.

Somali rebels: Up to $8K to kill Kenyan forces

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? A Kenyan official says a message intercepted from the Somali Islamist extremist group al-Shabab shows that rebels are being offered up to $8,000 to kill Kenyan security officers.

Garissa County Commissioner Maalim Mohammed said Thursday the rewards are enough incentive to motivate some youths in the eastern Kenyan county to carry out attacks against Kenyan army and police. The pay by al-Shabab varies with the security officer's rank.

Mohammed said local Somalis are responsible for recent attacks on Kenyan security forces that have caused the deaths of 10 police and four soldiers in northeastern Kenya. Kenya has experienced a string of gun and grenade attacks since it sent troops into Somalia to pursue al-Shabab rebels.

An army sergeant on vacation was shot dead Sunday in Garissa by a lone gunman.

Jazz Legend Dave Brubeck Dies Aged 91 | Maboot.com

Legendary jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck passed away yesterday aged 91, at a hospital in Norwalk, Conn, just one day before he was set to turn 92.

Brubeck had an incredible career in the jazz music industry, spanning over seven decades. Most notably Brubeck succeed at being both an artistic and a commercial success.

Brubeck brought an inventive style to his music which helped to bring jazz music to a main stream audience. Pieces such as ?Take Five? captured listener?s imaginations due to the piece?s exotic and challenging rhythms.

Russell Gloyd, Brubeck?s manager has explained that the star was on the way to hospital for a regular health check-up with a cardiologist, before his heart gave in, and he later passed away with heart failure. Brubeck was scheduled to celebrate his birthday today with a concert. It is thought that this concert will still go ahead, in the form of tribute performances, in Waterbury, Conn.

Many consider Brubeck to be one of the greatest figures ever in the art and entertainment world, despite this he was an extremely modest man.

Included is his monumental legacy are musical pieces such as his 1959 hit album ?Time Out?, which became the first jazz album to ever sell over 1 million copies, and shockingly reached the number two spot if the pop album charts.

Brubeck did not just tour America with his music, the jazz legend made a huge effort to take his music to formally forbidden countries, touring countries in the Middle East and the old Soviet Union, leading him to become honoured by a range of presidents and foreign dignitaries.

Throughout his seven-decade spanning career Brubeck released nearly 100 albums both singularly and with his quartet featuring saxophonist Paul Desmond, who become known as one of most popular jazz groups in history.

Despite his grand age, Brubeck still worked a busy schedule, and just two years ago his quartet won the reader?s poll of Downbeat magazine as the best jazz group, a staggering 57 years after he first won the same award.

David Baker, a distinguished professor of music at Indiana University, and a close friend of Brubeck, has spoken of the legend?s death and the legacy he shall leave behind him, stating: ?Dave Brubeck was one of the giants in the music ? he changed the way people listened to the music.?

Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh made some great plays on Sunday against the Colts, sacking Andrew Luck once, hitting Luck as he was passing five times, and tackling Colts running backs behind the line of scrimmage twice. But he?s taking some criticism for not stepping up when the Colts scored the winning touchdown on the game?s final play.

An unnamed member of the Lions? coaching staff told Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports that Suh left his rush lane on the Colts? winning touchdown, giving Luck space to step up out of the pocket and find receiver Donnie Avery open for the score.

?It?s Football 101. Don?t let the quarterback get out of the pocket,? the anonymous coach said. ?[Zone] coverage, only a touchdown can beat you, make the [quarterback] throw from the pocket, get in his face. But don?t, under any circumstances, give the quarterback a chance to escape and create. That?s where the defense breaks down.?

Without knowing the Lions? defensive call on the play, it?s impossible to know whether Suh did his assignment correctly or not. But looking at the play (as I just did several times, using both the TV angles and the all-22 coaches? tape), it?s hard to see how anyone could blame Suh for the Colts? touchdown. The Lions rushed with four defensive linemen and dropped seven into coverage, while the Colts had five offensive linemen blocking for Luck and five receivers running routes. Of the Lions? four defensive linemen, Suh was the only one who got double teamed, and yet Suh was the one who got the closest to Luck of any of them. In coverage, the Lions had seven to cover five, and yet Avery was able to get wide open.

In other words, the numbers for blaming Suh don?t add up: When a defensive tackle is getting doubled, someone else on the line needs to step up and beat his one-on-one block, and it?s not Suh?s fault that the Lions? other three defensive linemen failed to do that. And when the defense has more players dropping into coverage than the offense has running pass patterns, it?s a breakdown in coverage if one of the receivers gets wide open. That breakdown is certainly not Suh?s fault.

Suh gets a lot of criticism, and a lot of it is deserved. But blaming Suh for the Lions? loss on Sunday feels like piling on.
