Assassin's Creed 3 -- A Gaming Revolution - G4tv.com

Assassin's Creed 3

Assassin's Creed 3 is the final chapter in the story of Desmond Miles, the once-reluctant assassin, who with the help of his ancestors and the animus may be the key to saving the world. Did I mention this game takes place during the American Revolution? It's a lot to take in but if Assassin's Creed 3 delivers, it will be the ultimate conclusion to a thrilling story.

If you're worried, let Morgan Webb ease you off that ledge before you jump into a pile of hay. This game delivers and then some. Find out why in our Assassin's Creed 3 Review.

"This game has a ridiculous amount of content. There are whole portions of the game and major mechanics that I haven?t even mentioned here. There are endless collectables that you actually want to collect, like peg leg trinkets that open up pirate-style searches for hidden treasure. There are hidden forts that need to be liberated, chests that need to be looted, and citizens that need to be saved. There are missions to liberate zones in both New York and Boston that eventually let you recruit new assassins to your cause. You then send these assassins on missions of their own, or just use one of their many modes, such as ambush, bodyguard, or marksman, to make your own life easier. The naval and land based missions are all replayable with additional objectives for full synchronization. There are multiple groups that each offer side challenges, such as a hunt for Bigfoot. If you want to unlock fast travel locations, you?re going to need to explore the extensive underground tunnels. Just when you think you?ve done everything, you find more fully voiced missions, more things to collect, and more bad guys to kill."

For all the reasons you need to check out AC3, read our full Assassin's Creed 3 Review.

More Tips For Feeding The Family, Hurricane Edition

Our readers were buzzing with ideas after yesterday's post on keeping the family well-fed during Hurricane Sandy-related power outages. What topped their list of topics? Egg safety, coffee preparedness, and what to do with pantry goods.

So we thought we'd round up some of the best of your suggestions, plus a few new tips, as we plow through Day 2 of the storm.

Sterno-type cooking in 1948. Many people still use these cooking tools today when disaster strikes.

Sterno-type cooking in 1948. Many people still use these cooking tools today when disaster strikes.

AP

Early on yesterday, Salt reader Lari Robling of Philadelphia tweeted her pre-storm priorities: "Grind your coffee beans while you have power. Give that hand can opener a good cleaning ? bacteria thrives in those crevices."

Robling knows hand can openers. She's the brains behind Endangered Recipes, a book and website dedicated to tapping our grandmothers' forgotten recipes, and she works on a healthy food project for member station WHYY called Fit. She tells us storms remind her that in many parts of the world, hauling water and makeshift cooking are the norm.

Many other readers agree that the hand can opener is a storm cook's best friend ? for eating beans, tuna, and evaporated milk right out of the can. Crackers, bread and cold cereal are your pairings with these items right now.

And Robling has more ideas on what to unearth from the pantry:

"I always have buttermilk powder and egg white powder in my pantry. They are shelf stable and good not just for emergencies but for when you just don't feel like going out to the store if a recipe you want to do calls for them. Also, canned evaporated milk in the 5-ounce cans. It substitutes for cream in soups and if you melt some cheese it is a decent cheese sauce and mixed with cooked pasta is a decent mac and cheese substitute."

Of course if you have a gas stove or a gas grill outside and it's safe enough to go out, you can cook just about anything on it, as reader Dave Baldwin noted in the comments yesterday. "You don't have as much control, so you have to raise/lower pots to get the temperature right, but it works. You can even bake, in a Dutch oven, although again you don't have anywhere near the control you would in your nice gas range," he wrote. Just be careful about keeping the cooking area well-ventilated.

Other options readers suggest include sterno cans and chafing dishes, but we'd recommend against cooking raw meat on them. You might want to keep a thermometer handy and remember to ventilate if you're considering breaking them out. And check out the video below of how to set up a sterno and portable stove.

For the Boy Scouts among us, our pals over at Serious Eats did a round up a couple of years back about sternos, butane burners, and survivalist camp stoves. And former Gourmet editor Ruth Reichl tweets that she's using her fireplace to fry eggs this morning.

As your frozen items start defrosting, think soup, many readers tell us. And invite the neighbors over to use up leftovers or have a group cookout, once you can go outside safely.

Whether you get outside or you're stuck inside for awhile, lots of us are going to have to throw out some food after the storm. There's no way around it if the power's off for several hours or days (see this list to keep everything as safe as possible).

But one of the more heartbreaking issues new moms face during power outages like this one that can last for days includes losing frozen breastmilk. Over at the San Diego Breastfeeding Center, they report that breastmilk can stay safe in a full freezer once the power's out for 48 hours, sometimes more, plus they have some helpful tips on storing it longer.

Speaking of longer storage, a few of you weighed in on the eggs issue. In yesterday's post, we listed eggs among the perishables to use up, in addition to milk. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers eggs perishable, folks in other countries sometimes store them in the cupboard.

Anna Vigren reports on the science that shows eggs are pretty disease resistant and that there's no need to store eggs in the fridge unless they're known to have been laid by a hen infected with Salmonella. Cook them thoroughly, in any case.

And if you're still stuck at home with kids and there's power and pantry items aplenty, here's Food 52's list of projects like soft pretzels and peanut butter cookies.

How To Fill and Shape Agnolotti Pasta Cooking Lessons from The ...

How to make stuffed agnolotti.

Now that you've learned how to make homemade pasta, it's time to up the ante! How would you like to make tender bite-sized pillows of pasta, plump with a creamy filling? Yes? Sounds good, right? It's easier and quicker than you might imagine. Take a look at this method ? demonstrated by a pro: Bill Briwa, an instructor at the Culinary Institute of America's Greystone campus.

This tutorial comes to you from the Culinary Institute of America, where I attended a workshop hosted by the United States Potato Board earlier this week. One of the sessions was a chefs' feast of potato creativity, with chefs from all over the country cooking and assembling some pretty creative potato dishes (potato risotto! potato tabbouleh! pickled potatoes!), led by Chef Briwa.

I was keenly interested in one of the dishes in particular: a potato-filled agnolotti. Agnolotti are like ravioli's smaller, squarer cousin, easier to fill and cut out. Briwa demonstrates the technique here for you ? doesn't it look simple? Watching him, it seemed so easy and quick. I am certainly going to find a good night to make these soon!

How To Fill and Shape Agnolotti Pasta

serves 4 to 6

What You Need

Ingredients
1 batch Fresh Egg Pasta
Flour
1 batch Potato-Mascarpone Filling (recipe below)
Coarse cornmeal
Butter and herbs, to serve

Equipment
Pasta maker
Big cutting board
Sharp chef's knife
Large pastry bag
Large pastry tip
Pasta wheel cutter

Instructions

1. Make a batch of fresh egg pasta and "knead" with the pasta machine. Instead of extensively kneading the fresh pasta dough, fold it and run it through a pasta maker on one of the thicker settings. Fold the pasta sheet over on itself and run it through the pasta maker again. Repeat 8 to 10 times, or until the pasta is very smooth and elastic.

2. Let the pasta rest. Wrap the pasta in plastic and let it rest at room temperature for about half an hour.

3. Roll out the pasta. Unwrap the pasta and run it through the pasta maker again on one of the thinner settings.

4. Cut the pasta into rectangular sheets. As the sheet of pasta comes off the pasta maker, lay it on a floured board and cut it into rectangular sheets about 12 inches long. Sprinkle flour lightly on each sheet after you cut it, and continue stacking sheets on top of each other.

5. Pipe out the filling. Pull one sheet of pasta off the top of the stack. Put the potato-mascarpone filling in a large pastry bag fitted with a wide tip (it should be at least 1/2-inch across). Pipe a straight line of filling lengthwise on the pasta sheet, leaving enough pasta at the top to fold over the filling.

6. Make a pasta tube around the filling. Fold the pasta top over the filling. Press firmly to seal. You can moisten the tip of your finger and run it along the seam if it doesn't want to stick together. Use a wheeled pasta cutter or a sharp knife to cut the filled tube of pasta away from the rest of the sheet, making sure to keep the sealed strip intact.

7. Make and cut the agnolotti pockets. Use the tips of your fingers to pinch the tube of pasta into equally-sized sections, creating a seal between pockets of filling. Use the wheeled pasta cutter or a sharp knife to separate the sections. Quickly cut through each, leaning the tube of pasta in the direction you're cutting. You should be left with small, individual pockets of filled pasta. Place the finished agnolotti in a tray of coarse cornmeal.

8. Repeat and store. Repeat until all of the pasta sheets and filling have been used. At this point the pasta can be cooked right away, covered and refrigerated overnight, or frozen, or frozen. To freeze, freeze until solid on a large baking tray, then transfer to containers or freezer bags.

9. Cook the pasta: To cook fresh or frozen agnolotti, cook in a large pot of salted boiling water for 2 minutes or until tender. Serve with a drizzle of olive oil or melted butter and a sprinkle of chopped herbs such as parsley or basil.

Truffled Potato-Mascarpone Filling

makes one batch agnolotti

1/2 pound mashed potatoes, prepared from instant or from your favorite recipe
3 ounces mascarpone cheese
1 tablespoon truffle oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Mix the mashed potatoes with the mascarpone and truffle oil. Taste and season with salt and pepper. Set aside until ready to use.

Orphaned stars linger in dark matter haloes

Joanna Carver, reporter

tidal-tails.jpg

(Image: NASA/JPL-Caltech)

Outcast stars stripped away by galaxy mergers may be trapped in the cocoons of dark matter that surround galaxies. If so, these stars would explain seemingly random smatterings of light in the infrared sky, which should illuminate studies of how the first galaxies formed and grew.

The universe is permeated by faint infrared light called the cosmic infrared background radiation, thought to be a collective glow emitted by all the stars and galaxies in the universe. This splotchy haze contains strange fluctuations that can't be explained by known sources.

Previous research hinted that the odd pattern might be caused by the very first stars and galaxies in the universe or the light of nearby dwarf galaxies that are too faint to resolve. But that would mean the universe spawned many more galaxies than we can detect, which would create turmoil for current models of how the cosmos has evolved.

Now, a new infrared map from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope shows that unseen galaxies are not the culprits. When the intensity of light from the mysterious splotches is measured against that of known galaxies, it simply doesn't match, says Matthew Ashby, an astrophysicist at Harvard University who is on the study team.

cib-map.jpg

(Image: NASA/JPL-Caltech/UC Irvine)

The team instead found that Spitzer's map fits nicely with theories that there should be stars embedded in dark matter haloes. Observations suggest that the visible matter in galaxies is wrapped in much bigger envelopes of mysterious mass, which seems to hold the galaxies together. As galaxies merge, so do their dark matter haloes.

During these violent collisions, most stars and gas sink toward the middle of the growing galaxy. But streams of stars also get ripped from their homes by gravitational forces, creating what are called tidal tails.

According to theory, some of these stars may settle in the newly swollen dark matter haloes, which are so large that the stars would seem to be adrift in intergalactic space. Fluctuations in the infrared background could be the faint light from these isolated stars, says Ashby.

Team member Edward L. Wright notes that more work is needed to confirm the idea. The new research looked at a larger area of sky than ever before, but Spitzer's sensitivity is limited. When the James Webb Space Telescope is completed sometime in 2018, its advanced infrared eye should be able to get a more detailed picture of the faint galaxies in the early universe, and perhaps expose the spattering of lights in the dark spaces between galaxies.

The Naked Truth about Audio Visual Systems in San Diego ...

The Naked Truth about Audio Visual Systems in San Diego

Author (louisahemstreet). Submitted on Wed, 24 Oct 2012

Different music inclinations, does your household have? In every nook and corner of your San Diego home, do you desire multimedia to be offered? If both your answers are "yes", then establishing an audio visual system in San Diego is the right solution.

Having your very own entire residence or multi-room audio visual system can provide enjoyment and contentment to every relative. Nonetheless, planning to put in one for your house can be puzzling as there is a variety of systems to choose from. Before heading out and buying the numerous components for your system, there are numerous standard things that should be looked at.

The number of zones or rooms in your system is the first thing that should be thought about. This is just what basically separates an entire home and a multi-room system; an entire house system covers every space of the house while a multi-room covers around 2 to four rooms. The number of zones you prefer for your audio visual system also affects the difficulty of its installation.

As soon as the number of zones has actually been settled, you should next figure out the number of media sources (CD members, MP3 members, FM radio, and others) for your system. Do you wish each zone to have its own media source, or do you wish it streamlined with only one source for all the zones? Your choice on the number of sources usually influences the number and complexity of parts you require for your residence system.

Due to considerable improvements in wi-fi modern technology, distribution of media to different areas around your home has actually become much simpler. Due to the fact that running wires with different parts of your home is the most tough part of wired audio aesthetic system installments, the simplicity that wi-fi systems bring is coming to be popular with more customers. Nonetheless, wired systems have a benefit over wireless variants when it concerns seem and video quality, control, and flexibility.

Speakers are crucial elements in every audio visual system, so you should make sure that you just purchase from high-grade providers, such as Crestron in San Diego. You typically have 2 options when it comes to speakers: in-wall and conventional. While in-wall speakers offer space-saving modern technology for your residence, traditional speakers have a benefit regarding the flexibility of its positioning and its upgradability. For more info, go to stereos.about.com.
