I saw an article recently on the RISMedia website about a strange secret.? Evidently, in 1957 Earl Nightingale wrote a book called The Strangest Secret.? He and the book became famous with a simple message:? we are what we think.
Swell, more psychological mumbo jumbo, right?? It makes you think of Saturday Night Live and Stuart Smalley?s Daily Affirmations.? If you?re not familiar with the skit, here?s a less than a minute video that will show you what I?m talking about.
But, after I thought about it, I know the message is true, and it really does make a difference in how you feel about what you?re doing.
Ever have a friend that did nothing but complain?? Every word out of their mouth was about something that was wrong.? Wrong with them, wrong with the real estate market, wrong with the government, wrong with their job, their boss, their partner, their kids, and the list got long and boring.?? How do you think that person felt at the end of the day?? I?d imagine they were pretty worn out.
And, I?ll bet that when any other thought entered that person?s head, they turned it into a negative.? Maybe the person mentioned that they were going away for the weekend.? Should be a good thing, right?? But, once they got into that ?wrong? mode, all they could talk about was how much extra work it would be to get packed while working 18 hours a day ? and the drive!? The roads will probably be horrible getting out of the city.? And, well, you see what I mean.
The article also mentioned a quote that, interestingly enough, has quite a lot of competition for attribution.? Looking on the Internet, it?s been attributed to Unknown, Frank Outlaw (whoever he is), Mahatma Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher and Lao Tse.? I figure if so many people attribute it to so many others, it must be a pretty cool quote:
?Watch your thoughts, they become words.
Watch your words, they become actions.
Watch your actions, they become habits.
Watch your habits, they become your character.
Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.?
This is just your thought for the day
