Minn. to test Obama influence on gay marriage

(AP) ? Voters in Minnesota will test the political impact of President Barack Obama's support for gay marriage this fall, when they decide whether to ban gay marriage in the state Constitution.

Opponents hope the president's enduring popularity in Minnesota will persuade skeptical Democrats to vote for gay rights. In all, four states either have or are likely to have statewide votes on gay marriage in November, and all four are states Obama won convincingly four years ago.

Minnesota's measure is the most severe, and would toughen existing limits on gay rights. Those working to defeat it hope enough voters follow the president's self-described evolution on gay marriage.

Obama is visiting Minnesota on Friday to tout his jobs initiatives and hold a fundraiser in Minneapolis.
