A game plan for climate change

Feb. 27, 2013 ? Researchers have successfully piloted a process that enables natural resource managers to take action to conserve particular wildlife, plants and ecosystems as climate changes.

The Adaptation for Conservation Targets (ACT) framework is a practical approach to assessing how future changes in air and water temperatures, precipitation, stream flows, snowpack, and other environmental conditions might affect natural resources. ACT enables scientists and managers to work hand-in-hand to consider how management actions may need to be adjusted to address those impacts.

"As acceptance of the importance of climate change in influencing conservation and natural resource management increases, ACT can help practitioners connect the dots and integrate climate change into their decisions," said WCS Conservation Scientist, Dr. Molly Cross. "Most importantly, the ACT process allows practitioners to move beyond just talking about impacts to address the 'What do we do about it?' question."

The ACT framework was tested during a series of workshops at four southwestern United States landscapes (see map) that brought together 109 natural resource managers, scientists, and conservation practitioners from 44 local, state, tribal and federal agencies and organizations. The workshops were organized by the Southwest Climate Change Initiative, representing The Nature Conservancy (TNC), the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), Climate Assessment for the Southwest (CLIMAS), the Western Water Assessment, the U.S. Forest Service, and the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

One example comes from the Bear River basin in Utah, where workshop participants looked at how warmer air and water temperatures and decreased summer stream flow might affect native Bonneville cutthroat trout habitat and populations. The group strategized that restoring the ability of fish to move between the main stem of the Bear River and cooler tributaries, protecting cold-water habitat, and lowering the depth of outflow from reservoirs to reduce downstream water temperatures could help maintain or increase trout population numbers as climate changes.

Participants in another workshop considered the impacts of reduced snow-pack and greater variability in precipitation on stream flows in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico. To maintain sufficient water in the system and support aquatic species and riparian vegetation, attendees identified options such as restoring beaver to streams, building artificial structures to increase the storage of water in floodplains, and thinning the density of trees in nearby forests to maximize snowpack retention.

"The ACT process helps workshop participants move beyond the paralysis many feel when tackling what is a new or even intimidating topic by creating a step-by-step process for considering climate change that draws on familiar conservation planning tools," Cross said. "By combining traditional conservation planning with an assessment of climate change impacts that considers multiple future scenarios, ACT helps practitioners lay out how conservation goals and actions may need to be modified to account for climate change."

The results will help land managers as well as people. "Climate change impacts livelihoods and threatens the water supplies of many of our communities," says Terry Sullivan, The Nature Conservancy's New Mexico state director. "We hope that this tool will be utilized to help make decisions which will lead to healthy and sustainable watersheds, and ultimately sustain water supplies for farms and cities."

(AP) ? The 2007 chemical attack left the Vermont nurse unrecognizable to anyone who knew her.

But now Carmen Blandin Tarleton's face has changed again following a facial transplant this month.

Doctors at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston said Wednesday that the 44-year-old's surgery included transplanting a female donor's facial skin to Tarleton's neck, nose and lips, along with facial muscles, arteries and nerves.

"I know how truly blessed I am, and will have such a nice reflection in the mirror to remind myself what selfless really is," Tarleton wrote on her blog Wednesday.

The Thetford, Vt., woman suffered burns on more than 80 percent of her body and was blinded after her estranged husband attacked her with a baseball bat and doused her with lye in 2007.

Tarleton, who once worked as a transplant nurse, has undergone more than 50 surgeries since the attack, including work to restore some of her vision.

The latest surgery took 15 hours and included a team of more than 30 medical professionals. The lead surgeon, Bohdan Pomahac, called her injuries among the worst he's seen in his career.

"Carmen is a fighter," the doctor said Wednesday. "And fight she did."

Pomahac's team has performed five facial transplants at the hospital. He said the patient is recovering very well and is in great spirits as she works to get stronger.

He said she was very pleased when she saw her face for the first time, and that her appearance will not match that of the late donor's face.

"I think she looks amazing, but I'm biased," he said with a smile.

The donor's family wants to remain anonymous, but released a statement through a regional donor bank saying that her spirit would live on through Tarleton and three other organ recipients.

The estranged husband, Herbert Rodgers, pleaded guilty in 2009 in exchange for a prison sentence of at least 30 years.

Body found on golf course after gunfire heard in Sunrise | Video

Police officer on routine patrol hears gunshots, finds body on golf course

8:18 a.m. EST, February 18, 2013

SUNRISE?

After gunshots rang out in Sunrise before dawn Monday, authorities found two bullet-riddled cars and then found a man's body on a nearby golf course, police said.

The incident happened about 4 a.m. along the 3800 block of North University Drive.

A Sunrise police officer on routine patrol heard multiple gunshots in the area and then found two cars with bullet holes in a parking lot on the west side of University Drive, Sgt. Rodney Hailey said.

A Goldfinger Gentleman's Club and Hooters restaurant share the parking lot.

Subsequently, investigators discovered a man's body on the property of the nearby Seven Bridges at Springtree Golf Club. He appeared to have died from gunshot wounds, according to Hailey.

Investigators were at multiple businesses in the area, speaking to people. Near the Hooters restaurant a man in a white shirt was being interviewed. His hands were wrapped in bags as if to preserve evidence.

Police were also seen at the Fins & Things Caribbean Seafood Bar & Grill at 3801 North University Drive.

Shortly before 8:00 a.m., one of the two vehicles hit by gunfire, a Mazda with two bullet holes in its windshield, was allowed to leave the parking lot. The woman driving the vehicle refused comment. It's believed the car was not targeted, but was hit by stray bullets.

No other information was immediately available.

This developing story will be updated throughout the day.

Westminster Dog Show What Happens During the Day - ChicagoNow

By Steve Dale, today at 8:22 am

Westminster Dog Show this year had 2,721 entries, the largest number of dogs in 15 years. Over the past few years, numbers entered had declined due to space constraints at Madison Square Garden, which is under construction. This year, the daytime activities associated with the show were moved to the Piers. This is an expansive space on the Hudson River on the West side of Manhattan allowed for twelve rings, the benching space for all these individual dogs as well as space for vendors selling everything from pet food to breed specific earrings or bracelets for people.?The Piers are just that, two long separate side-by-side piers jutting like fingers out into the Hudson River (separating New York and New Jersey). And because of the extra space the thousands of attendees don't feel and crushed, at least that is the hope.

Here's what happens - all the dogs must compete against their own first. So, you name the breed (there are 187 breeds and varieties), from the Golden Retriever to the Chinese Crested first they compete against other members of their own breed. Ultimately only one dog can represent the breed and move on to the evening?competition?seen on TV.

These images are from activities that?occurred?during the day.

Foreclosure Crisis may be coming to an End | THE REAL ESTATE ...

In a report out of ABCNews.com, experts believe the worst is over in the foreclosure crisis that has been wreaking havoc on distressed homeowners over the past six years.? Foreclosure numbers are trending downward as the national foreclosure rate fell 28 percent in January compared to last year.? Lenders also took control of fewer houses in the past year.? Many states are facing this issue head on with both legislation and programs put in place to curb foreclosure starts and give resources to struggling homeowners.

Get this: California, a state that has taken quite a beating throughout the foreclosure crisis, had a 75 percent decrease in foreclosures from a year ago. If that isn?t a sign that things are finally turning around then I?m not sure what is.

However, we haven?t fully turned the corner just yet.? Florida still leads the nation in foreclosures with one in every 300 homes slated for foreclosure.? That?s more than twice the national average.? See the full report here.

Rhapsody at the ballet | Triangle Arts and Entertainment

A dance can change the way you hear a familiar piece of music. A skilled choreographer can use a subtle movement to draw your attention deep into the song, to a sound you?d never noticed,or move the dancers as if their bodies are singing, keeping you wrapped in the melody.

Carolina Ballet?s Rhapsody, a new ballet choreographed by Zalman Raffael and the opening number for the current program, is this kind of dance. A charmingly fairy-like Cecilia Iliesiu danced the part of a young girl, a confused outsider among people. Jan Burkhard portrayed the same person, more mature, but still an outsider. The pair, in shades of blue, pass and acknowledge each other in confusion. Partnering alternately with Marcelo Martinez, it could be understood as a love triangle, and maybe it is on some level, with reclaimed youth winning out. Even with the subject matter of self-acceptance and belonging, it?s a light and fun dance that mimics the laughing clarinet in the music, George Gershwin?s Rhapsody in Blue. Raffael?s choreography is perfectly musical, but not literally lyrical, so the movement doesn?t just follow the melody, but fills every nook and cranny of the music.

Glazunov Pas de Deux, a classical pas de deux by?Artistic Director Robert Weiss, paints the picture we see in our minds when we think ballet. Lilyan Vigo and Richard Krusch both have such pleasant and cheerful appearances, and they look completely unaffected by the demanding lifts, leaps, and turns. A royal sort of grace and dignity is with this pair as they dance.

The two works by Lynne Taylor-Corbett show her diverse skill at moving bodies and stories. The first, December Songs, has a New York, I Love You feel, telling short stories of love and loneliness as people pass a bench in a city park. Each dance is unique with some drama and some comedy. Randi Osetek lets down her hair in relief at the end of a relationship. Yevgeny Shlapko performs a solo in his delightfully odd and jazzy style. The live vocals are sung by Lauren Kennedy, who stands onstage as a narrator telling her own sad story, moving among the memories. Adding to the intimacy is piano accompaniment by Glenn Mehrbach. Music and lyrics were written by Maury Yeston. At times the lyrics are too literal and simplistic. But, they do the job, paired with the dances, of reminding us that everyone longs to for a connection with others.

Code of Silence, Taylor-Corbett?s second work of the night, is a breathtaking finale for the program. This is a must see. Taylor-Corbett tackles the human rights work of Amnesty International in a moving way. The men, wearing drab jumpsuits under harsh lighting, are remarkable in their portrayal of suffering through violent convulsions. The women, clearly separate from the men?s plight, are sympathetic and affected as they record the violations they witness. At times the women are drawn into the anxiety and fear-driven chaos; other times they offer apprehensive comfort. They bring a light to the stage, and that light goes with them when they leave. Speaking of the light, it plays such an important role in this dance that Ross Kolman?s design can?t go without mention. As I stood to applaud, I was thinking of when I could see this again.

The identity of the Carolina Ballet is strong at the midpoint of their fifteenth season. There is a visible reverence to the history and tradition of ballet together with a fearless and limitless drive to present innovative and important work.

Oscar Pistorius Arrested: Paralympian To Appear In Court After Fatal Shooting In His Home (VIDEO/PHOTOS)

  • 2012 London Paralympics - Day 10 - Athletics

LONDON, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 08: Oscar Pistorius of South Africa celebrates as he wins gold in the Men's 400m T44 Final on day 10 of the London 2012 Paralympic Games at Olympic Stadium on September 8, 2012 in London, England. (Photo by Bryn Lennon/Getty Images)

South Africa's silver medallist Oscar Pistorius (L) and Brazil's gold medallist Alan Fonteles Oliveira (R) embrace on the podium during the medal ceremony of the men's 200m T44 athletics event at the London 2012 Paralympic Games at the Olympic Stadium in east London on September 3, 2012. Pistorius apologised on September 3 for the timing of his outburst after losing his T44 200m title, but insisted there was an issue with large prosthetics lengthening an amputee's stride. Pistorius, the star of the London 2012 Paralympics, was sensationally beaten into the silver medal position by Brazil's Alan Oliveira on September 2, in a result that stunned the Olympic Stadium. The 25-year-old then hit out at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), claiming it was not a fair race and he was at a disadvantage caused by artificial leg length, as the regulations allowed athletes to make themselves 'unbelievably high'.
